Why? I think that opening that sort of information up would be a terrible idea.

Well, RSS is not a matter of "opening to the world" but it is just a way to export data. It's clear that in this case target is the staff and not the world.

Example scenario (Gmail, iGoogle gadget, etc.):

Many thirty-part apps just want RSS as input.
Gmail, iGoolge are just examples but even some smart board like "IPB" that allows you to import any standard RSS feed as auto-created topics on the board. It would be great for a private staff forum:
